Once upon a time...

Children's Storybooks

a little girl was born in Queens, New York. Her parents named her Doreen, after a character in a book! As a child, Doreen did not like reading. She did like catching lizards, eating mangoes and playing Barbies with her sisters.

Eventually, Doreen grew up, went to college and studied journalism. She loved interviewing people and writing articles for newspapers. For many years, she worked as a journalist and editor - telling other people’s stories. She found this work to be very satisfying. She even won some awards.

But her favorite job in the whole wide world was being mom to her three children. That’s when she discovered her love of children’s books! And so began her journey to write for children. Many years later, she is still on that winding road with its twists and turns. She's discovered that there is no quick path to publication. But along the way, Doreen has read hundreds of incredible, inspiring, and informative books for children by amazing authors and imaginative illustrators. She has so many books at home, she's running out of room!

Doreen continues to learn the craft of writing for children through online classes, in person courses, industry conferences, and by entering contests. She is still dreaming big and pursuing her passion to become a published author. Right now, her story has no ending...

So she keeps revising, revisioning and rewriting. She knows she has inspiring characters that face some struggles, grow through their challenges, meet helpful people along the way, and find their unique voice. It's just a matter of time before her stories get out into the world.

Maybe you want to tell your own stories, too? Doreen's advice? Start writing - cause only you can tell your story!

Thanks for stopping by!

More about me...

_edited.png

When I was four years old, my family traded snow for sand and palm trees. Many years later, I still prefer sandcastles to snow angels.

I love volunteering! I was a coach for Ody
ssey of the Mind, ran the Wildcat Publishing Lab at my children's elementary school, helped our high school marching band during competitions, and judged high school debate tournaments.

I've gone scuba diving, parasailing and hot air balloon riding. They were all terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.

I've worked as a journalist and editor for community newspapers for over 25 years. I consider it an honor and a privilege to tell someone's story.

When I'm not reading, writing and revising my manuscripts, I like to garden, practice yoga and take walks with my dogs.

What do I write about?

I write fiction and nonfiction, in prose and in rhyme. Many of my stories relate to my Jewish
identity and include universal themes of friendship, doing the right thing, overcoming
obstacles and striving to make the world a better
place. I write lyrical stories and funny
stories, too!

What do I read?

Almost everything! I like picture books, obviously. I also enjoy reading chapter books,
novels in verse, and novels. I read newspapers, magazines and even the back of
the cereal box. By reading across different genres and media, I learn something
new every day!

Reading is like a key - it opens the door to the world. And books are like a
mirror and a window. Hopefully, you can see yourself reflected in books that
you read.

But also, it's important to see others - like peeking in a window and
seeing the world from someone else's perspective. Books that include
diverse characters and settings allow readers to learn about others.
This helps break down stereotypes and helps foster compassion
and kindness.
